As per ayurveda, the three pillars of life are proper food, sleep and brahmacharya (sexual life). Sleep disturbance is a main problem faced by many of us. Usually people indulge in the habit of taking sleeping pills which later creates an addiction. There are many treatment options in ayurveda for this problem based on the reason of not getting proper sleep. Day to day activities always influence sleep. Emotional imbalances, anxiety, fear, depression, stress and tension are some common factors. Some medical conditions also leads to sleeplessness. Sleep problems can be managed with both internal and external measures. Internal medicines are available to balance the disturbance in doshas. External therapies like oil application, herbal paste on head, shirodhara, shirovasti etc gives good results. The expert advices and guidance of a good doctor and therapist can help you solve the problem instead of sedatives and tranquilizers. Creating a better physical, mental and social health is the best sedative. Yoga sessions and a good healthy diet also promotes good sleep and mental relaxation. Listening to peaceful music, reading pleasing books, chanting prayers etc. are some techniques that can be followed.
